Episyrphus balteatus
General description:
A very common and widespread species. The larvae feed on a wide range of aphids including cereal and cabbage aphids.
Diagnostic description:
This is a very variable species, however the double organge bands on the abdominal segments is not observed in any other British species. Typically they are very richly coloured, hence the common name of Marmalade Hoverfly, however, very dark individuals are not unknown - the intensity of the orange colouration is influenced by the temperature at which the larvae develop.
