SUMMARY
There are currently over 1500 species of insects listed as recorded in the Outer Hebrides compared with over 14,000 for Scotland. The insect fauna of both Scotland and the Outer Hebrides is under-recorded and the current level of information on species diversity varies between taxa. In the Outer Hebrides the species list for the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), Odonata (dragonflies), Orthoptera (Grasshoppers) and Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps) is reasonably comprehensive but less is known about the diversity of many of the other taxa.
The climate and limited variety of habitats restricts the diversity of insects, however, there are more species to be added to the list.
