Diagnostic description:
Clupea harengus is a streamlined shoaling fish which may reach up to 40 cm in length and 0.68 kg in weight. The body is silver with a darker blue iridescence over the upper half of the body and a paler underside. The tail is deeply forked, there is a single dorsal fin with the pelvic fins situated slightly in front of the line of the dorsal fin.
