Amphibia
General description:
There are five species amphibians in Scotland: the common frog (Rana temporaria), the common toad (Bufo bufo), the natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) and three newts: the smooth newt (Triturus vulgaris), the palmate newt (Triturus helveticus) and the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus).
In the Outer Hebrides the common frog is widespread whilst the common toad is only regularly recorded in north west Lewis. There have been one or two reports of palmate newts from Grimsay but the records have not been verified. The common frog and the palmate newt are introduced species and it is probable that toads may also be non-native in the islands
