Pipistrellus (Pipistrelle)
General description:
There are records of pipistrelle bats from earlier this century for the Outer Hebrides and more recent records from around Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. There are anecdotal reports of at least two colonies in Stornoway and others at both New Market and Lochs on Lewis.
There are three species of pipstrelles recorded in the UK, and although the bats recorded in the Outer Hebrides are likely to be the common pipistrelle, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, there has not been a verified identification.
