Oryctolagus cuniculus (European Rabbit)
General description:
Rabbits were introduced to South Uist in the 18th century and become established on North Uist, Harris and Lewis by the late 19th century. Myxomatosis was introduced as a control measure in the 1950s, and although it originally decimated the population it later recovered and isnow controlled periodically to mitigate damage to the machair.
