Anisoptera (Dragonflies)
General description:
In Great Britain and Ireland there are about 30 species but only four are regularly recorded in the Outer Hebrides.
In dragonflies (Anisoptera) the hind wings are usually shorter and broader than forewings. The wings are held out from the body, often at right angles to the body, when at rest. They are usually large, strongly flying insects that can often be found away from water. The eyes are very large and usually touch.
