Eristalis tenax
General description:
A bee mimic often called the drone fly. It has a long active season elsewhere but in the Outer Hebrides it has only been recorded in the summer.
Diagnostic description:
There are three main diagnostic chracateristics: an enlarged and curved hind tibia, a wide black facial stripe and a vertical stripe of long hairs on the eyes.
