Syrphus
General description:
The diagnostic feature of the genus is the presence of hairs on the uppe surface of the squamae (lobes at the base of the hind margin of the wing next to the halteres) but most easily recognised by a yellow and black banded abdomen, a yellow face and a dusted thorax with a dull bronzey-greenish appearance. There are three common and widely distributed species in the UK which have all been recorded in the Outer Hebrides, however they can be difficult to distinguish.
Identification:
Stubbs, A.E. & Falk, S.J. ( 2002) and Ball, S & Morris, R. (2013) should be consulted for full descriptions.
