SUMMARY
Three of Britain's sixteen subspecies of field mouse are found in the Outer Hebrides: St Kilda field mouse (Hirta and Dun), Mingulay field mouse (Mingulay and Berneray) and the Hebridean field mouse (other islands). It is likely that field mice arrived in the islands from Scandinavia in the cargo of Viking trading vessels (Berry 1979).
