SUMMARY
The native black bee Apis mellifera mellifera now has a very restricted distribution in Scotland. The climate is too harsh for the commercially reared strains of honey bees and very few hives are kept in the islands. There are, however, a very small number of records for honey bees in the Outer Hebrides.
