Bombus hortorum (Garden Bumblebee)
General description:
The garden bumblebee is one of the more common species found in the islands and often one of the earliest to appear. A large bee with a long tongue it frequently collects pollen from flowers with a corolla tube such as peas, vetches and clovers.
Diagnostic description:
Distinguished from the white-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lucorum) by the double band of yellow on the thorax and the long face.
