Urocerus gigas (Greater Horntail Wasp)
General description:
Although commonly misidentified as a wasp, Urocerus gigas is a member of the Siricidae (woodwasps) which are classified as sawflies (Symphyta).
This species has only been recorded on the Isle of Lewis and its status is uncertain.
Diagnostic description:
This is a very large (up to 4 cm long) sawfly with a distinctive yellow and black banded abdomen. The females have a very long ovipositor (hence the common name of horntail) which is used to bore into conifer wood.
Identification:
Symphyta (except Tehthredinidae). (Quinlan & Gauld 1981).
