Anthocharis cardamines (Orange-tip)
General description:
The distribution of this species has increased considerably in Scotland over the past 30 years. There are only two records up to 2014, both from Lews Castle grounds in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. There is an earlier record from the west coast of Lewis but this is not fully documented.
Diagnostic description:
A distinctive white butterfly, aprticularly the males which have bright orange wing tips. In females the wings tips are black. The underwings are a mottled moss green in both species. The females are similar to small white butterflies (Pieris rapae) but are distinguished by the patterned underwings. On the wing from April to mid-June
