Argynnis aglaja (Dark Green Fritillary)
General description:
Occurs in a range of flower-rich grasslands including coastal grassland, moorland and wet flushes and acid grassland with bracken. It appears to be more commonly recorded in the southern islands of the Outer Hebrides where it is usually observed from July to August.
Diagnostic description:
This is a large butterfly with a powerful flight. The upperwings are orange with black marking whilst the underwing has a characteristic green colouration. It is the only fritillary recorded in the islands.
