Pontania
General description:
Sawflies of the genus Pontania (Eupontania) cause closed galls in leaves mainly in willows (Salix).
Waterston (1981) notes that four species of Pontania have been recorded from galls on willows, but that only two species have been confirmed by breeding. There are no records of P. bridgmanii or P. proxima from the Outer Hebrides that we are currently aware of.
Diagnostic description:
Closed sawfly galls are all structurally similar and are simple swellings caused by the multiplication and enlargement of the plant host cells. In all sawfly galls the insertion of the ovipositor of the egg-laying female causes the the initial swelling.
